Moving From the 2019 to 2024 ANSI/BIFMA Furniture Sustainability Standard

BIFMA Sets Out a Transition Period From e3-2019 to e3-2024

This memo outlines the transition from the 2019 to the 2024 version of the ANSI/BIFMA e3 Furniture Sustainability Standard. It includes key dates and certification options related to the release of the updated standard.

BIFMA published the 2024 edition of the standard on April 21, 2025, following ANSI approval; this date marks the start of the 12-month transition period.

Version Selection Options During the Transition Period

For New Applicants:

Organizations applying for LEVEL certification for the first time may choose to certify to either the 2019 or 2024 version of the standard until April 21, 2026. After this date, only the 2024 version may be used for initial certifications.

For Existing Certificate Holders (Recertification):

If your recertification occurs on or before April 21, 2026, you may choose to recertify to either the 2019 or 2024 version.

If your recertification occurs after April 21, 2026, you must certify to the 2024 version of the standard.

Note: In all three scenarios, a completed audit and approval for certification must be completed before the deadline.

These transition rules ensure consistency while allowing sufficient time for organizations to plan and prepare. As always, certified products must fully conform to the selected version of the standard. Mixing of credits or criteria between versions is not permitted.

If you have questions about your certification timeline or need support in planning your transition, please contact your LEVEL certification body or BIFMA directly (Steve Kooy).

Thank you for your continued commitment to sustainability and participation in the LEVEL certification program.
